American as Apple Pie: Manassas Plans July 4 Pie Baking Contest

Few things say "America" more than apple pie and the Fourth of July, and you can probably get a fair share of both at the Independence Day apple pie baking contest in neighboring Manassas on Thursday.

Baker extraordinaires and their pies will be at the Harris Pavilion in Old Town Manassas between 4 and 6 p.m. on July 4 to discuss their pies and present a copy of the recipes to the judges.  Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.
First prize is a $100 gift card. Second prize is $75 gift card and third is a $50 gift card.

Here are the rules pie bakers must abide by:

  • Pies only, no tarts or crisps 
  • No store bought pies, pastry shells or fillings 
  • Pies must be at room temperature at the time of the contest
  • Pies must be baked in an aluminum pie plate suitable for a 9 inch pie 
  • Only 1 pie per contestant can be entered. 
  • Pie recipes must  be the creation or a favorite of the contestant 
  • A printed copy of the recipes along with the contestant's name, address and phone number must be presented with the pie.
