Meetings will begin 15 minutes later so every board member can attend the entire meeting.
The Manassas Park City School Board voted 4-1 Monday night to change the time its meetings begin. Meetings will begin at 7:15 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. in the school board meeting room, upstairs in Manassas Park City Hall. School board member Brenda Foster brought the measure before the body on Monday night, saying that the meeting time had been changed before and that prehaps it should be done again so that the newest school board member Fran Kassinger can attend the entire meeting. Kassinger was appointed to the board in 2012. The school board is made up of working professionals like Kassinger who come straight from their jobs to the meetings. School Board Rachel Kirkland voted nay to the measure, saying that there had been no discussion …

The game plan: My plan was really loose. My son's birthday is Oct. 29. Shopping for Christmas always starts right around then. I have some stuff from Toys R Us' Big Book and a layaway from another good weekend sale. Today was about random deals and clothes for the boys. Fair Oaks is my mall of choice. My mom always meets me, driving in from Silver Spring The deals: Fifty percent off at Abercrombie before 9 a.m., Macy's $10 off coupon, 30 percent off at Gymboree, $10 jeans at JCPenney. The recap: I hit Abercrombie's 50 percent off sale for a couple of shirts for Jacob. He gets a lot of hand me downs, so I splurge on names for him here and there to fill in. He calls Abercrombie "the oose store" and likes their shade of green in tees…

Deputies equipped 10-year-old Jimmy Kirkland with a Project Lifesaver bracelet. The bracelet will help authorities track Jimmy, should he wander off.
Just days after Robert Wood, an 8-year-old autistic boy, was found alive after six days of being lost in Hanover County, deputies one hour away in Manassas, secured a simple band around the arm of another autistic boy, 10-year-old Jimmy Kirkland—an action that, perhaps, secured him from suffering the same fate as Wood. Jimmy’s parents, Rachel and Jim Kirkland of Manassas Park, said they fought long and hard to get their son off a long waiting list and into Prince William County’s Project Lifesaver, a program that uses radio wave-emitting bracelets to track people who are prone to wandering off, such as those with Autism and Alzheimer’s Disease. “By all accounts, Robert Wood is very much like Jimmy. It was as gift from God that he was …

I was born and for the most part raised in Southern California. With the exception of a brief sojourn for three years to northwest Indiana, I lived in suburban Los Angeles, the high desert, and San Diego prior to moving to the DC area twenty years ago. Throughout my youth, earthquakes were a part of life. Shortly after my first birthday, we experienced a 6.6 quake. The epicenter was the community where my mom's parents lived - their home and neighborhood sustained heavy damage. Olive View Medical Center, only open for a month, largely collapsed. My other grandmother worked there. The VA Hospital also sustained serious damaged and loss of life. Several freeway overpasses collapsed. My mother told me that she had a hard time …
