Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung died while responding to an incident on New Year's Eve. Yung's name was added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, alongside 19,000 other officers who have been killed in the line of duty. He's one of 127 officers who died in 2012 and are being recognized this week. From postal inspectors to small-town sheriffs, Congress has dedicated the week of May 15 to honoring America's law enforcement officers, especially those killed in the line of duty, each year. Some 1,700 people -- family, friends, policemen and policewomen -- arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial by bike to join thousands of others honoring fallen officers in Washington, D.C.
Led by a caravan of motorcycle cops, an estimated 1,700 people arrived at the national police memorial on their bikes Sunday, part of a week-long series of events to honor more than 19,000 officers lost in the line of duty. The motorcyclists and bicyclists rode beside each other and behind each other, into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and between two 304-foot marble walls etched with the names of officers lost. Officers from the Prince William County Police Department gathered in Washington, D.C. on a drizzly Tuesday morning to honor Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung, who died while responding to an incident on New Year's Eve. Yung's name was added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, alongside 19,000 other officers who have been killed in the line of duty. The names of 319 other fallen law enforcement officers will be added to the memorial this spring, which include 120 officers who died in 2012. Event at Freedom High School raising money for family of officer killed in Manassas wreck.
Prince William County Schools' basketball stars will be competing Tuesday night for a good cause — supporting the family of a fallen Prince William County Police officer. Hoops Fest 18 is an annual fundraiser spotlighting the top basketball talent in the school division in several individual and team competitions. Admission is $10, with proceeds supporting the family of officer Chris Yung. Yung died in the line of duty on Dec. 31 in a Manassas car accident. Those wanting to show respect for the memory of the late Prince William Police Officer Chris Yung can do so by ordering custom shirts and hooded sweats shirts made in his honor. The groups Law Enforcement United (LEU) and Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) are offering the shirts as well as stickers that pay tribute to Yung, who died Dec. 31 in a motorycycle crash. The items were created inresponse to request from residents, friends and officers who wanted a way to show they were dedicated to the memory of the young officer, according to the Prince William County Police Facebook page. Margaret Luecke, of Gainesville, is set for a two-day jury trial in July.
A grand jury has indicted a Gainesville woman on reckless driving charges in connection to the accident that ended the life of Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung. Insidenova.com reported Friday afternoon that Margaret Luecke, 69, of Gainesville, was driving the Dodge Caravan that allegedly pulled out in front of Yung's motorcycle Dec. 31. Yung, 35, was driving his motorcycle to a traffic accident. Authorities said that he was driving through a green light on Nokesville Road in Bristow, with his sirens and lights on, when a 2001 Dodge Caravan crossed into his path. The Virginia General Assembly this week passed a resolution honoring Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung, who died in the line of duty on New Year's Eve. With Yung's family by his side at a ceremony Wednesday, Del. Jackson Miller (R-50th district), a former Prince William County police officer, spoke before the House of Delegates on Monday about Yung and the resolution. H.R. 123 (and S.J. 332) honors Yung's life and service to the Commonwealth. It is also patroned by another former Prince William officer, Sen. Bryce Reeves (R-17th district). Prince William County officials said the Virginia state flag and the U.S. flag were both lowered to half-staff in memory of a deceased Prince William County officer. Though the county executive office gave the order to lower the county flag in light of Prince William County Officer Chris Yung's Dec. 31 death, at some county buildings, all the flags were apparently lowered, Jason Grant, spokesman for Prince William County, said. "With the timing being during a holiday, there were staff who were unfamiliar with the policies and lowered all flags initially. That was corrected later," Grant wrote in an email. Prince William County Police are looking for witnesses to the Dec. 31 crash that ended in the death of Officer Chris Yung. Yung was on his way to another traffic accident when a 2001 Dodge Caravan crossed in front of him on Nokesville Road, investigators said. Authorities said that Yung was traveling through a green light, and had his siren and lights on when he was hit. He died at a local hospital. The incident is still under investigation. Thousands attended the funeral service Friday for Officer Chris Yung, who died in the line of duty early this week.
After tearful goodbyes Friday morning, thousands of onlookers watched as Honor Guards marched by the Hylton Memorial Chapel, a bagpiper played "Taps" and United States Marines fired their guns. Then, Prince William County bid a final farewell to an officer who by all accounts, was one of its finest. Countless officers and firefighters from jurisdictions all over Virginia raised their hands in a salute as a dispatch operator's voice sounded over the speakers: "Prince William calling motor 4887.
