The NOVA STEM academy allows Osbourn and Manassas Park High Students to take college classes at the Manassas campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
A few fortunate juniors and seniors from Osbourn and Manassas Park High Schools will have access to college courses without paying any money, thanks to the implementation of a new program at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). The college, the schools as well as their respective school boards, Micron Technology and Aerojet teamed up to make the new program free to students and their parents, NVCC spokesperson Carlene Mackereth said. The program has room for 120 students from each school, allowing them to work toward a certificate or an associates degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, where there is a projected shortage of workers. Manassas Park High School students will perform the popular play, "Anything Goes" Saturday night at 6:59 p.m. at the Thomas H. DeBolt Auditorium inside the Manassas Park Middle School. The play is about Reno Sweeney, a nightclub singer-turned-evangelist who is traveling aboard the SS American from New York to London in the 1930s. Senior Jacob Williams is the first student in the history of Manassas Park High School to be accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Manassas Park senior Jacob Williams has been accepted to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point—the first student in the small high school's history to do so. Jacob, along with his family, were recognized on Monday night before the Manassas Park City School Board. He began talking about going to West Point as a sophomore, but his parents didn’t take him seriously back then, he said while smiling. Jacob began the application process as a senior, but thought his dream of attending the highly-touted military institution was finished after he didn’t get a congressional nomination; a requirement to be considered. The Manassas Park High girls soccer team walked away from its season opener on Friday scoreless. The girls traveled to C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge and were defeated 8-0. Manassas Park's Abby Sowalla came away with 10 goalie saves, while Hylton High's Julia Suarez scored four points, the most for her team. Carmen Suarez of Hylton scored two points, while Kylee Bell and Jamie Biddle each had one assist. The girls of Manassas Park will be on the road again this Friday when they go to play Rappanhannock High School in Rappanhannock, Va. All six of the Cougar wrestlers placed individually in the match held in Salem Va.
Manassas Park High School placed in the top three at the state wrestling meets on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. The team placed third behind Grundy and Strasburg High Schools, MPHS Athletic Director Dan Forgas said. "We ended up losing the team title by 19 points. I thought we wrestled really well with the six kids we had," said Mark Payne, Manassas Park High wrestling coach. The cougars season record wasn't immediately available. The Manassas Park girls and boys swim team competed Saturday at the Manassas Park Community Center.
The Manassas Park High School boys swim team earned its first win of the season Saturday in a matchup against Madison County High School. The final score in the boys match was 117-52. The Madison County girls swim team triumphed over Manassas Park 97-72. The combined team scores were Manassas Park 189 and Madison County 149. During the match, the Manassas Park team had 46 personal best times, Manassas Park head swim Coach Sam Olbes said. The MPHS Swim Team is in their second season. The Cougars are coached by head Coach Sam Olbes and assistant Coach Sandy Hammersley.
