Breastfeeding Station to Open in Manassas Park City Hall

A room especially for nursing mothers and their babies is planned for Manassas Park. August is National Breastfeeding Month.

An existing room in the Department of Social Services in the Manassas Park City Hall will be converted into a station for nursing mothers and their babies, said Addie Whitaker, director of Social Services in Manassas Park. The room and its supplies are funded by the Prince William Department of Health in Manassas, which hasn’t yet announced an opening date for the nursing station. The room will be open to city employees and residents. Fathers of nursing babies are welcome, too, Whitaker said during a July city council meeting when the announcement proclaiming August National Breastfeeding Month was made by the governing body. "We designed the room with fathers in mind," she told city council in July. Manassas Park is a breastfeeding-…

City Council Rejects Proposed Downtown Development

Governing body turns down $4.56 million upfront payment.

In a heated meeting where, at moments, council members came close to yelling at each other, the Manassas Park City Council on Tuesday narrowly rejected a proposed multiphase residential-commercial development  and a one-time $4.56 million payment that would have helped the city balance its books. On a 4-3 vote, the council turned down the development, tentatively called Park Place at The Station, that would have had 40,000 square feet of retail for 10 to 12 stores and 304 apartments. The project would have had a 20-acre footprint and the first phase would have been built along Manassas Drive and Railroad Drive near the VRE commuter station. The owners of the proposed development, Digital Park LLC, were present for the vote but did not …

The fact is there wasn’t near enough commercial development in that proposal. From what I’ve heard there wasn’t any commercial going to be built and there was no guarantee it ever would. I’m so tired of the city jumping like a puppy dog after a bone every time someone waves dollars in the air. Please think of what’s best for the city in the future, not the big “now” There’s a couple guys on …   more ›

Obama's Lead Shrinks in Virginia, University Poll Shows

Quinnipiac University poll shows presidential race in a dead heat at 44-44 percent in battleground state.

President Obama and former Massaschusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are in a dead heat for the battleground state of Virginia, according to a poll released Thursday. The two candidates are tied at 44 to 44 percent, according to a new poll by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Ct.  Obama's lead in the state is shrinking, according to previous polls by the university, which showed Obama leading by 47 to 42 percent in June and 50 to 42 percent in March. "Virginia voters are sharply split along gender and political lines about the presidential race. The two candidates equally hold their own political bases and are splitting the key independent vote down the middle," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, …

City Council to Honor Park Center Automotive Owner David Ford

David Ford, owner of Park Center Automotive, will be recognized at tonight's Manassas Park City Council meeting.

Longtime Manassas Park mechanic David Ford will be honored at tonight's city council meeting. Ford has owned and operated Park Center Automotive—just a stone's throw away from city hall—for more than two decades. By many accounts, Ford is known in the Manassas Park area for his kindness to customers and his unique repair shop which boasts an eclectic mix of antique railroad lanterns, tea kettles and a hobby train that runs along the sides of the main room. Most notable is the front end of an antique Ford Thunderbird curiously mounted on the wall. In other news, Manassas Park City Council will also recognized August as National Breastfeeding Month and receive an update on Manassas Park City Schools from Superintendent Bruce McDade.

What the Neighbors are Doing: Manassas City's Credit Gets Upgraded

While Manassas Park received two credit downgrades in one year, things are looking up financially for neighbor Manassas City. Increase in tax base, operational cuts cited as reasons for upgrade by Moody's Investor Service.

The City of Manassas' credit rating has improved and it's mostly due to cuts in operation costs during the recession and a larger tax base. "The removal of the negative outlook reflects the improvement in the city's financial position due to operating adjustments made to alleviate fiscal pressures over the past two fiscal years to maintain solid reserve levels," according to a release issued in late June by Moody’s Investor Service. Newly re-elected Council Member Jonathan Way recently said the council has worked hard the last four years to weather the economic storm and work with a "starvation budget." He said the council had to take a number of "unpleasant" tasks to survive, including cutting staff and freeze wages, but it a paid off. "…

Why Are the Water Bills in Manassas Park Higher This Month?

Your Patch editor again explains why the water and sewer base rate doubled in Manassas Park.

Many people keeled over, cursed or cried when they read their water and sewer bills this month in Manassas Park. Yep. This is the first billing cycle that reflects the new base rate of $52 a month per customer; doubling the $26 fee they were paying. The fee is in addition to the amount billed for water usage and is static. A couple of residents contacted me this week about why the water bill is so high. Over the past year or so, I've done several pieces on this matter, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to publish another piece about Manassas Park's water and sewer bills and how city officials arrived at the rate increase.  OK, so here are the basics: Manassas Park City Council voted on May 15 to increase the base rate Before the vote, city …
