We’re launching our annual Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America — the best “decked” house in the country —the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s. If this sounds like your house, upload a photo or video of your home to our contest page from Nov. 26 to Dec. 16 (check the site Monday for a direct link to our contest page so you can enter). Only residents of Patch towns are eligible to enter. We’ll select 24 regional finalists, and from them, pick one grand prize winner. Fire and rescue officials said store exits must be unblocked and aisles kept clear holiday decorations and merchandise.
All those extra shippings of holiday goods that stores receive could pose a threat to their customers if merchants aren't careful, according to the Prince Wiliam County Fire and Rescue department. While a store crowded with shoppers isn't necessary a bad thing for merchants, some effort should be made to monitor how many people are in the store at one time, to avoid going over the maximum occupancy allowed by the county or city fire marshal. Here are some of the rules and guidelines for local business owners this holiday season: Holiday merchandise can't be stored in front of an exit or within 18 inches of a sprinkler head, fire officials said. Tickets for the annual event sell out fast, Virginia Railway Express officials say. Last year more than 7,500 sold.
Tickets for the highly-popular Virginia Railway Express Santa Train event go on sale Monday at 9 a.m. This year's Santa Train is on Dec. 8; trains will depart from the Manassas, Burke Centre, Woodbridge and Leeland Road stations. More information, inlcuding train depature times, are available on the VRE website. Each year the Virginia Railway Express allows children and their parents to ride the commuter train and meet Santa, Mrs. Claus and their helpers—who will all hand out candy canes, coloring books and VRE Operation Lifesaver rail safety information. For just $3 you can walk away with a handmade ornament for your Christmas tree.
Feeling the Christmas spirit? Families can head to the Manassas Park Community Center on Dec. 6 and make their own Christmas tree ornaments, instead of buying from retailers. For $3 per person, community center staff will supply the dough and all the supplies for crafting the ornament. After that, the ornament belongs to the creator who can add it to the decorations on their Christmas Tree. The workshop is just one of many holiday events offered in Manassas Park. The annual light parade takes place just two days after the ornament making, and on Dec. 13, there will be Ginger Bread house decorating at the community center, parks and recreation.

Good point, Eugenia. I was lucky to buy my fresh green swag over Thanksgiving and to get my tree the first week of December. Otherwise even those very simple decorations might have never happened! -Shaun more ›
