Students at Manassas Park schools could be starting classes before Labor Day in the near future if a measure adopted by the City Council on Tuesday wins final approval at the next session of the Virginia General Assembly. The council approved the measure that change the city's charter, the part that addresses school scheduling. Changing that part of the city charter would allow the city school division to set its own starting date for the school year. Currently, the state mandates starting dates for almost all the schools in the state, usually after Labor Day. A bill to allow schools in the state to adopt their own starting times failed to pass in the last session, but council members said they thought the city could win an exception. …

While creating the Fiscal Year 2013 budget, city staff “failed” to anticipate the consultant costs for project.
City Council decided Tuesday to take some $6,000 from the Manassas Park Capital Fund Balance to pay for the required update to its Emergency Operations Plan. The state requires municipalities to update the Emergency Operations Plan every four years, according to city documents. City Council plans to approve the update at its Dec. 18 meeting so it can be submitted to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management by January, as required. If approved by council, Manassas Park residents will start paying a $52 base fee for water and sewer next month.
Manassas Park residents expressed their intense displeasure to city council Tuesday about a proposed hike in their water and sewer bill that would be effective in next month's billing cycle. If the increase is approved this month by city council, Manassas Park residents will pay $52 each month, even if they don’t use a drop of water or flush a single toilet. The $52 is a base fee; any usage is an additional charge Manassas Park resident Lori Mattison spoke at Tuesday's public hearing, telling her concerns to the governing body. Mattison said the increase negates everything her condo association did to bring its fees to residents down. Why don't they also consider cutting down the amount of days off that the children get. November itself seemed like a wash with regards to days out of school with the additional days off taken due to Hurricane Sandy. Already scheduled daysa off, like Veteran's Day or teacher workdays should have been cancelled to make up the time.   more ›
