Event at Freedom High School raising money for family of officer killed in Manassas wreck.
Prince William County Schools' basketball stars will be competing Tuesday night for a good cause — supporting the family of a fallen Prince William County Police officer. Hoops Fest 18 is an annual fundraiser spotlighting the top basketball talent in the school division in several individual and team competitions. Admission is $10, with proceeds supporting the family of officer Chris Yung. Yung died in the line of duty on Dec. 31 in a Manassas car accident. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Freedom High School, 15201 Neabsco Mills Road. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Prince William Today. Hundreds of police, emergency, fire and county vehicles preceded and followed the hearse carrying the body of Officer Chris Yung on Friday.
Hundreds of spectators lined the streets of Prince William County on Friday to watch the hearse carrying the body of a fallen police officer slowly pass on its way to a private burial. The thunder of hundreds of police motorcycles riding two-by-two announced the arrival of the procession as it made its way down University Boulevard to Freedom Boulevard and Wellington Road to the Prince William County Western District Police Station. More than an hour before the procession arrived, people gathered along Manassas roadways leading to the station or up on the grassy knoll in front of the Freedom Aquatics Center to pay their respects to the late Officer Chris Yung, who died Monday in a crash just outside of Manassas. A young Prince William County Police officer died Monday in a crash on Nokesville Road. Chris Yung, 35, a seven-year employee of the department, was assigned to the traffic division and was traveling on his motorcycle to another incident just after 2 p.m. when the crash happened. The driver of a mini-van was traveling north on Nokesville Road and made a left hand turn into the Super Target shopping center into the officer's path, who was traveling south on the roadway. Yung was transported to a local hospital, where he later died, Prince William County Police spokesman Jonathan Perok said. No one else was injured in the crash.
