Increased Student Enrollment Factor in $34 Million Proposed Schools Budget

More teachers are needed to keep class sizes from increasing in some Manassas Park schools, school division staff said.

About $34 million is needed to keep Manassas Park’s four schools clicking on all six cylinders next fiscal year, according to a budget presentation by Dr. Bruce McDade, the superintendent of Manassas Park City Schools. The $34.74 million budget proposed by McDade is purposed to carry the school division through Fiscal Year 2014 which begins in July and ends in June of 2014. The budget is about $325,000 more than the current operating budget, McDade said Monday night after he presented his proposed budget to the Manassas Park School Board.  There are many reasons why more money is needed, but one of the main reasons is an expected increase in enrollment of students, McDade said. They hope to use some of the money is to hire additional staff…

Hi Shawn, Thanks for commenting. I agree with Rachel. Do share your concerns with the school board and division staff. A good time is at the meetings, right at the beginning they allow time for the public to address the board. Thanks, Jamie   more ›

Manassas Park Not Immune to Dip in SOL Math Scores

Manassas Park administrators present SOL scores from 2011-2012 to Manassas Park City Council.

"Manassas Park students were not immune to the drastically lower scores on the Standards of Learning (SOL) math tests administered this year across Virginia—lower scores school officials from the department of education on down are blaming on the more strenuous test given for the first time last school year. Manassas Park City Schools administrators made it abundantly clear during their accountability presentation at Tuesday’s city council meeting that the new tests were a lot tougher and accounted for, in some cases, more than a 30-point drop from last year’s scores. The 2011-2012 school year was the year for the new mathematics standards and the new mathematics test in Virginia. Manassas Park third-graders, who are now fourth-graders at …

National math test scores continue to be disappointing. This poor trend persists in spite of new texts, standardized tests with attached implied threats, or laptops in the class. At some point, maybe we should admit that math, as it is taught currently and in the recent past, seems irrelevant to a large percentage of grade school kids. Why blame a sixth grade student or teacher trapped by …   more ›

New Student Computers Coming to Manassas Park Schools

Replacing the aging computers at three of the four schools in the city costs more than $200,000.

Students heading home for the summer today have at least one thing to look forward to when they return (some reluctantly) to their classrooms in the fall—new computers.  This month, the Manassas Park School Board approved the purchase of 98 new laptops for Manassas Park Middle School.  The new computers will replace the aging 6-year-old units that were put in place when the school was built. At $841.97 a piece, the school division will pay a total of $82,513 for the upgrade, according to school division documents.  Each of the new Dell Latitude E5420s has 2.0 gigabytes of memory.  The school division also ordered 200 new desktop computers for student workstations in Manassas Park High, Manassas Middle and Cougar Elementary Schools. The …

Queen's Subjects in Va. Have Varying Views of Monarch

This week marks Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee: 60 years on the British throne.

Pauline MacGregor Bonilla, born and raised in Scotland, proudly totes a Scottish passport and will quickly tell you in her Scottish accent that she doesn’t “give a crap” about the queen of her homeland. Great Scot! Sixty years on the throne or not, Bonilla said Queen Elizabeth II and the royals haven’t done anything for her. In fact, she would like to see the British monarchy done away with completely. “It’s a waste of money. I mean, I like the two boys,” she said, referring to Princes William and Harry, the queen’s grandsons.  “I cried when Diana died, but I cry about everything.” The fact that the queen visits Scotland, a part of the United Kingdom and even has a home near her hometown, doesn’t affect her view of the British crown, said …

School Board Member Ron Gill Won’t Seek Second Term

Today is the last day to apply for appointment to the Manassas Park School Board.

Manassas Park School Board member Ron Gill said he won’t seek a second term on the school board after his current term expires on June 30.  Gill, a former school teacher, began his three-year term in 2009, but said he won’t reapply for his position, because of a change in his full-time work schedule. “Unfortunately, I will not be applying … for reappointment to the school board.  My work schedule has changed and I have had an exponential amount of travel added to my requirements,” Gill wrote in an email.   “This frequent travel has made it very hard for me to join many of the sessions during this calendar year.  And my absences have placed an unfair burden on the rest of the members of the board to accomplish the many things they are …

Parents, Teachers Applaud Proposed Budget for Manassas Park Schools

2013 budget schools budget appears to be well received by parents, teachers.

Manassas Park City Schools parents and teachers praised a proposed school district budget that would award all 370 employees with a 2 percent pay raise next year, the first such hike in four years. A handful of speakers took the podium Monday at a public hearing that gave them a chance to discuss the $33.5 million budget proposed for FY 2013. All were in favor of Superintendent Bruce McDade’s spending blueprint for the 3,000-student, four-school system. Debbie Dank, a teacher at the middle school and president of the Manassas Park Education Association, said the proposal represented a significant turnaround for the district. “We must keep funding our schools and keep our salaries competitive with other school systems,” Dank said. “We don’…

UPDATED: Proposed 2013 Budget Includes Pay Raises for Manassas Park Schools Employees

Manassas Park City Schools superintendent said everyone—except himself—will get a two percent pay raise in FY2013. This is the first time all employees have received additional compensation in four years.

A $33.4 million proposed budget for Manassas Park City Schools includes a two percent pay raise for all employees of the school division, except the superintendent.  "I cannot stress enough how pleased we are to provide a salary increase for the first time in five years,”  Dr. Bruce McDade, superintendent of Manassas Park City Schools, said on Monday.  McDade presented his proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget Monday night in the form of a light-hearted, picture-filled, 17-minute PowerPoint to a large crowd assembled in the Manassas Park High School commons area.  The school division is always encouraging its teachers to be innovative in their education of students by challenging themselves and trying new things, McDade said. That’s why his …

UPDATE: Manassas Park Schools Make AP District Honor Roll

The division earned the honor for its significant gains in Advanced Placement Access and student performance according to officials from College Board, the agency that compiles the list.

Manassas Park City Schools is one of 367 school divisions in the U.S. and Canada to be placed on the Annual AP District Honor Roll, College Board announced this week.  The division earned the honor for its significant gains in Advanced Placement access and student performance, according to officials from College Board, the agency that compiles  the list.  An additional factor in a school division making the list is increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. The majority of U.S. colleges and universities grant college credit or advanced placement for a score of 3 or above on AP Exams.  The Second Annual AP Honor Roll is made up of only those school districts that are simultaneously expanding opportunity…
