ACTS Inc. (Action in Community Through Service of Prince William, Inc.) is hosting a talk today at 7 p.m. in Dumfries featuring two cyclists traveling cross-country for Suicide Awareness.
Cyclists Thomas Brown and Zachery Chipps are biking cross country to bring attention to and prevent suicide. The Arizona residents' incredible 7,000 mile journey began in March at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Now a few weeks before the beginning of Suicide Awareness Month in September, the two are in Northern Virginia, said Vicki Graham, director of the ACTS Inc. Helpline. ACTS Inc. (Action in community Through Service of Prince William, Inc.) is a not-for-profit organization benefiting the Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park purposed to help alleviate human suffering. The Sexual Assault Victims Advocacy Service (SAVAS) of Prince William will become a program under the Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) umbrella on July 1. SAVAS has been providing assistance and support to victims of sexual assault and their families since 1983. The advocacy group serves residents of Manassas Park, Manassas and Prince William County. “SAVAS and the ACTS /Turning Points Domestic Violence Program have been working closely together in state and local coalitions for many years. Grace United Methodist Church (GUMC) will be receiving nearly 50,000 pounds of potatoes that they plan to distribute to local food banks and residents in the community. Debbie Cali is the Mission Chair at GUMC and said she was given 46,000 pounds of potatoes from a farmer in Maine. The truckload of potatoes is expected to arrive at GUMC early Sunday morning and Cali said the church could use some volunteers to help sort and bag the spuds for area food banks and local residents to pick up—for free. "We have some [food banks] from the D.C. area that are coming, but mostly from our area, including SERVE, ACTS, Reston Interfaith and several different churches that have food pantries," Cali said. Virginia's high school graduates are outperforming their peers on the ACT, according to a report released this week by the Virginia Department of Education The standardize college entrance exam, which tests students in English, math, reading and science is scored on a scale of one to 36. High school students across the country averaged a composite score of 21.1 while Virginia students—public, private and homeschooled—averaged 22.3, according to the department of education. This is the fourth year that Virginia students have performed above the national average on the tests. Students testing in Maryland averaged 22.1; in Washington DC, 20.
