The Manassas Park High girls soccer team walked away from its season opener on Friday scoreless. The girls traveled to C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge and were defeated 8-0. Manassas Park's Abby Sowalla came away with 10 goalie saves, while Hylton High's Julia Suarez scored four points, the most for her team. Carmen Suarez of Hylton scored two points, while Kylee Bell and Jamie Biddle each had one assist. The girls of Manassas Park will be on the road again this Friday when they go to play Rappanhannock High School in Rappanhannock, Va. Editor’s note: This is part two in a three-part series on two new ladies-only pole-dancing studios opening this month in Manassas. She’s not even 30, barely 90 pounds soaking wet, and maybe 5 feet tall wearing platform heels, but little Von Brianna has already scored some big accomplishments. The Gainesville resident opened Doll House Pole Fitness, the first pole fitness studio in the Manassas area on March 1. The 2,400 square foot facility is on Lute Court just off Interstate 66 and Balls Ford Road in Prince William County. The studio’s “Vixen Room” is home to 10 vertical chrome poles for dancing and instruction, Brianna said. All American wrestler and mixed martial artist Neil Johnson coaches Manassas Park children in the Cougar Wrestling Club.
The Cougar Wrestling Club of Manassas Park received a visit from a special guest Tuesday when all American wrestler and professional mixed martial artist Neil Johnson came by to coach the kids and talk about wrestling as a base for mixed martial arts (MMA). Johnson took home the 1992-1993 Virginia State Championship back when he was just a 140-pound wrestler at Stonewall Jackson High School. He went on to be an all-American wrestler for George Mason University. After a wrestling career, Johnson like many great collegiate wrestlers, wanted to continue to compete. He found a new outlet with the rise of mixed martial arts. After answering some questions about his wrestling in high school and college and continuing to compete in MMA, …

Manassas Park High sophomore Niecy Lindsay and senior Daniel Smith competed in the Virginia High School League AA/A swim and dive meet on Thursday in Christiansburg,Va. Lindsay swam in the girls 200 freestyle event and placed 31st with a time of 2:21.33, her personal best, Manassas Park High Swim Coach Sam Olbes said. Smith competed in the boys 100 breaststroke and placed 34th with a time of 1:14.49. Olbes said this is the school's second year at the meet and hope to make it back again next year. The Manassas Park swim team is just two years old, Olbes started the team in fall 2011.

Manassas Park High School placed in the top three at the state wrestling meets on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. The team placed third behind Grundy and Strasburg High Schools, MPHS Athletic Director Dan Forgas said. "We ended up losing the team title by 19 points. I thought we wrestled really well with the six kids we had," said Mark Payne, Manassas Park High wrestling coach. The cougars season record wasn't immediately available. All six of the Manassas Park wrestlers placed individually in the meet. Strasburg High pulled out a win over Manassas Park High Saturday in the Region B Wrestling Tournament at Strasburg High School. The top four tournament placers advanced to the state match up. "I thought we did about as well as we could have with the kids we had. Robbie (Ratchford) did an outstanding job and I'm sure that he would be a state qualifier if he would have wrestled in any other region," Manassas Park Coach Mike Payne said. "Our 113 pounder decided to not make weight for the second day and it cost us valuable points that we needed to win the tournament. The Manassas Park High School swim team competed in the Region B meet on Saturday at the Manassas Park Community Center. Manassas Park had 12 swimmers advance to this meet from the Bull Run District Meet held on Feb. 2. Those team members were: senior Daniel Smith; juniors Justin Sheard, Alexis Swanson, Taylor Geer, Hannah Campbell, Zachary Bunner, Karen Xu; Sophomores Austin Ponsart, Janiecia Lindsay, Rebecca Moreno and Shaina Williams, along with freshman William Studeny. Swimmers needed to have a qualifying time, a top four finish for individual events, or a top three finish for relays in order to advance to the State meet.
