Boobie-Que Planned for Saturday

Breast Cancer research fundraiser will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $25, children under 12 are free.

Shirl’s Girls of Manassas Park is hosting its annual Boobie-Que this weekend at Signal Hill Park.

If the name isn’t enough to spark interest, then the purpose of the event certainly will.

The Boobie-Que is a fundraiser for Shirl’s Girls, a group of women—many from Manassas Park—who are raising money to participate in the  Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure in Washington D.C. in September.

Proceeds will go to the Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

About 100, $25 tickets were sold in advance of the event, but more people are expected to show up, said Bobbi Beers, the founder of Shirl’s Girls.

If you didn’t purchase an advancer ticket, it isn’t too late to attend the event, Beers said.

“At this point, we just want people to come on out,” she said. “We are still hoping for about 300 people.”

At the Boobie-Que, a large pig will be roasted. Side dishes such a baked beans and slaw will be provided by Clarke’s of Manassas Park, she said.

An ice cream truck from Nathan’s Dairy Bar of Manassas will also be on hand, she said.

Beers said there will also be a lot of items up for raffle, so attendees are encouraged to bring cash.

“I’ve got a dining room table full of raffle items for kids,” she said. “They really like to bid.”

Children under the age of 12 are free and they are especially encouraged to come.

The Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation donated the use of the Signal Hill Park to Shirl’s Girls for the event.

 The Boobie-Que begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

The group name, “Shirl’s Girls” is derived from that of Beers’ mother, Shirley who is a three-time cancer survivor.
