Title MMA Fights, State Champ Come to Manassas Park Community Center

Northern Virginia’s fight promoter, OO Fights, will unleash 20 mixed martial arts matches, including two title fights at the Manassas Park Community Center on Saturday.

OO Fights (Formerly Operation Octagon) brings 20 mixed martial arts (MMA) matches—including two title fights— to the Manassas Park Community Center on Saturday.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with fights beginning at 7 p.m.  Manassas Park’s history of amateur wrestling excellence makes it a natural home for the growing sport of mixed martial arts, residents of the small city, said.

On Saturday, Virginia state champion wrestler Brett Jenkins will face Matt Ferguson from LA Boxing in Sterling.

Jenkins, a two-time state wrestling champ from Manassas Park High, began wrestling at age 6 for Bull Run. He wrestled at Manassas Park High from 1997 to 2000 and clinched state championships in 1999 and 2000.

Jenkins now works as a MMA trainer with Johnny Curtis, an all-American wrestler from George Mason University.

Jenkins comes from a line of sport successes. For more than 12 years his father Manassas Park’s first state wrestling champion, Greg Jenkins, has coached the Cougar Wrestling Club in Manassas Park.

Saturday’s event has a stacked card, with the main event pitting middle-weight champ Shurron Thompson against 5-0 contender Eric Kronstadt.

Thompson, a trainer with the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) in Quantico, has a 4-0 undefeated mixed martial arts record.

Kronstadt, who is fighting out of Shingitai Jujitsu of Parkville, MD, is on a five-fight winning streak that includes impressive stoppages in his last two fights in Sterling.  Josh Aguero will face Michael Serrano for the bantam weight title.

Saturday's event also features a toy and food drive benefiting the underprivileged families in the area.  Spectators who bring a toy or canned food will receive a special gift from OO Fights.

Nice article! Really, the Jenkins' are a nice family (my son has wrestled in their club for four years now), so I wish Brett much success Saturday night. Saturday night's event is the second of two that day - they also have an afternoon swim meet. It is nice to see the rec center so well used.
