School Board Has Budget Public Hearing Monday

The hearing will take place at 7 p.m.

The public will have a chance to comment on the school superintendent's fiscal 2012 proposed budget during the School Board's public hearing Monday.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the School Board meeting room in City Hall.

Superintendent Bruce McDade presented his budget to the School Board on Feb. 7. Of the budget's $35.7 million, $29.6 million will go toward operations, $4.7 million toward debt payments, $1.3 to food services and $6,000 towards medical payments for retirees who converted their unused sick leave.

Additionally, the budget calls for the purchase of three new school buses.

McDade explained in a press release that Manassas Park was one of only two districts in Northern Virginia to furlough employees during the school year. If approved, this year's budget will put an end to furloughs.

“It was critical to get the furlough off the table for the coming year,” McDade said.

Both highlights and a detailed presentation of the budget are available on the School Board's website .

“It is our hope that the community has had enough time since to review the proposal so that they may make comments about it at the hearing,” said Director of Financial Services Krista Kelly. “Once we have public input and the revised revenue projections from the state, the School Board can begin work on any modifications they feel are needed to move from the superintendent's proposed budget to the School Board's adopted budget.”

Kelly said that if time permits after the hearing, the board may hold a work session to begin discussing potential changes to the budget. If not “they may wait until the next scheduled work session on [March] 14.”

Voting for the adoption of the final product is scheduled to take place during the regular school board meeting on March 21.
