Manassas Park Swimmers to Compete in State Swimming and Diving Championship

Two Manassas Park High swimmers qualify to compete in the Virginia High School League Group AA and Group A Swimming and Diving State Championships this week in Christianburg.

Two Manassas Park High swimmers qualify to compete in the Virginia High School League Group AA and Group A Swimming and Diving State Championships this week in Christianburg.

Freshman Niecy Lindsay and Shaina Williams both qualify for  the meet based on their performance Saturday in the Region B Championship at the Manassas Park Community Center.

Lindsay came in third at 2:25.78; clocking a new personal best by exceeding her old best time by some 2.28 seconds.

Williams placed fourth in the meet with a time of 2:21.27; her personal best by 1.01 seconds.

 In order to advance to the state meet, swimmers must have a state qualifying time, or place in the top four for individual events or in the top two for relay events. The VHSL championship begins on Thursday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center and ends on Saturday.

 Lindsay and Williams were two of the six members of the Manassas Park High Swim team who competed in Saturday’s competition.  

 Manassas Park Swim Coaches Sam Olbes and Kim O’Brien both said they are very proud of the continuing accomplishments the team has made during its first season.

It’s a program that has made a positive impact on the school and the community, the coaching staff said.

 Team times

  • For the 200-yard individual medley, junior Daniel Smith placed eighth with a time of 2:36.19.
  •  For the 100-yard freestyle, Lindsay placed sixth with a time of a 1:06.00.
  •  For the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Sierra Sotelo placed eighth with a time of 1:23.19.
  •  For the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Karen Xu came in seventh place with a time of 1:25.41.
