Manassas Park Boys Swim Team Scores First Win

The Manassas Park girls and boys swim team competed Saturday at the Manassas Park Community Center.

The Manassas Park High School boys swim team earned its first win of the season Saturday in a matchup against Madison County High School.

The final score in the boys match was 117-52.

The Madison County girls swim team triumphed over Manassas Park 97-72.

The combined team scores were Manassas Park 189 and Madison County 149. 

During the match, the Manassas Park team had 46 personal best times, Manassas Park head swim Coach Sam Olbes said.

The MPHS Swim Team is in their second season. The Cougars are coached by head Coach Sam Olbes and assistant Coach Sandy Hammersley. The team's next meet is 3:30 p.m. Saturday against William Monroe High School at the Manassas Park Community Center. 

Here's a breakdown of the Jan. 5 results.

The 200-yard Medley Relay

The Manassas Park High team comprised of sophomore Thomas Smith, junior Justin Sheard, senior Daniel Smith and freshman Jonathan Glidewell placed first with a team best time of 2:04.63. 

Sophomore Austin Ponsart, freshman Kevin Naddoni, sophomore Matthew Gillespie and junior Isaiah Browne placed third and obtained a team best time of 2:21.35. 

The third boys’ relay team of freshman Lorenzo May, junior Anthony Towns, sophomore David Hanggi and freshman Wesley Mullins placed fourth with a team best time of 2:36.34. 

The girls’ team of sophomore Rebecca Moreno, junior Karen Xu, junior Taylor Geer and sophomore Shaina Williams placed second with a team best time of 2:19.10. 

The team with junior Alexis Swanson, freshman Kira Wence, junior Hannah Campbell and sophomore Niecy Lindsay placed third and also had a team best time of 2:26.15. 

The 200 yard Freestyle

Glidewell placed first with a personal best time of 2:31.32. Ponsart came in second place with his personal best time of 2:31.56. 

Freshman William Studeny locked in a third place finish with a time of 2:47.22.  May swam exhibition and obtained his personal best time of 2:59.44. 

Lindsay came in first place for the girls with a 2:31.78.  Swanson came in fourth place with a time of 2:49.63 and Wence came in fifth place with a personal best time of 2:54.03.

The 200 Individual Medley

Sheard swam his personal best of 2:36.24 and scored a first place finish.  Gillespie came in third place with his best time of 3:02.66. Naddoni also swam his fastest time of 3:05.35 and had a fourth place finish. Geer placed second for the girls with her personal best time of 2:50.19. Xu came in fourth place with a time of 3:02.69. Eighth grader Jessica Smith swam exhibition and obtained her personal best time of 3:02.89.

The 50-yard Freestyle

Browne came in second place with a time of 29.24 seconds. Mullins came in third place with his best time of 31.28 seconds. Junior Zach Bunner placed fourth and had a time of 31.93. Juniors Nick Gonzalez and Towns swam exhibition with time of 33.04. and 33.54 (personal best), respectively. Eighth grader Mabuto Richardson also swam exhibition. For the girls, Williams placed second with her personal best time of 30.21.  Campbell came in third place with a time of 31.76. 

Freshman Alexi Kerey placed sixth and obtained her personal best of 37.12.  Eighth grader Macy Alexander swam exhibition in 37.44 seconds.  Freshman Mandy Ayers also swam exhibition with a time of 39.90 and eighth grader Megan Meyers obtained her personal best with a 40.03. Finally, sophomore Katherine Meza-Rodriguez swam a 42.46. 

The 100 yard Butterfly

D. Smith placed second with a 1:12.70.  May and Hanggi got their personal best time with a 1:34.72 and a 1:43.31, respectively.  Geer placed second for the girls with a 1:17.92.  Swanson placed fourth and earned her personal best of 1:35.59.  Alexander swam exhibition with a 1:49.50.

The 100 yard Freestyle

T. Smith placed first with his best time of 1:10.34 while Gillespie placed fourth with his best time o 1:14.62.  Browne came in fifth with a 1:14.85. Naddoni swam exhibition with a time of 1:16.70 and Gonzalez also swam exhibition with his personal best of 1:18.57. 

Williams placed second for the girls with a 1:06.86. In fifth place came Kerey with a 1:25.59 and in sixth place came Ayers with a 1:33.01. Freshman Naima Chughtai swam exhibition with a personal best time of 1:33.44.

The 500 yard Freestyle event

Ponsart came in second place with a 7:04.11.  Glidewell placed third with his best time of 7:12.12. Studeny also got his personal best of a 7:12.91 and a fourth place finish. Lindsay earned second place for the girls and a personal best of 7:15.60. Campbell placed third with a 7:28.90 while J. Smith swam exhibition with a time of 7:38.34.

The 200 yard Freestyle relay,

The team composed of Studeny, Naddoni, Bunner, and Browne finished first and had a team best time of 2:04.19. In second place, came Gonzalez, Towns, Mullins, and Gillespie with another team best of 2:13.10. 

The girls had a second place finish with Moreno, Kerey, Wence, and Swanson with a 2:14.82. Swimming exhibition was Alexander, Meyers and Chugtai, and J. Smith with a team best of 2:35.88.

The 100 yard Backstroke

T.Smith came in first place with his personal best time of 1:19.81. Bunner finished second and had a best time of 1:21.32. Towns came in third place with a 1:34.54, a 26 second drop.  Richardson was disqualified. Moreno finished second for the girls with her personal best time of 1:26.03. Meza-Rodriguez obtained her personal best of 1:50.38 and a fourth place finish. Meyers swam exhibition with a 1:56.70.

100 yard Breaststroke 

The Cougars had a first, second and third place finish. D. Smith and Sheard obtained their personal best times of 1:14.90 and 1:16.54, respectively.  Hanggi obtained a 1:29.84 along with his third place finish. Mullins swam exhibition and earned his fastest time of 1:28.72. Xu and Wence had a first and second place finish for the girls with a 1:26.25 and 1:29.23 (personal best), respectively. Chughtai swam her personal best with a 1:54.17 in exhibition. 

The 400 yard Freestyle Relay

The Manassas Park team of Sheard, Ponsart, Glidewell and D. Smith placed first with a 4:25.09. Bunner, Hanggi, Studeny and T. Smith placed third with a team best time of 5:12.34. The girls’ team of Geer, Moreno, Lindsay and Williams placed first with a time of 4:45.30.  Campbell, Ayers, Chughtai and Xu placed third with a team best time of 5:43.37.
