This is the second year for the event, Terry said. Last year, the community showed great support and the turnout was good, she added.

The students who attended Countdown to Kindergarten last year are now in Kindergarten and are, "quite the group," Saunderson said. The students bring joy and laughter to the entire staff, she said.

This year's Kindergarten class has more than 300 students—much larger than in previous years.

The class is progressing well and the students are well on their way to becoming readers, Saunderson said.

The event is open to Manassas Park children who will have their fifth birthday on or before Sept. 30.

Parents are strongly encouraged to reserve their spot for the event by calling Cougar Elementary at 703-392-1317.

Those who don't respond are still welcome to attend the event.
