Annual Cougar Literacy Run of Manassas Park Looking for Sponsors

The event and 5K is on May 4 in Manassas Park.

The 8th Annual Cougar Literacy Run is now accepting sponsors and participates.

The goal of the home-grown Manassas Park event is to raise money for supplies for Cougar Elementary School students, said Audrey Baldwin, the director of the race.

This year, the goal is to raise $12,000 to buy electronic handheld tablets at a cost of $200 each. The Cougar students also have their own goals to meet.

In the months before the May 4 literacy run, the students work hard to meet their reading goals, Baldwin said.   Students who meet their goals are awarded a limited Cougar Literacy Run t-shirt.

Railroad Dental, Patient First, Sheetz and the school's parent-teacher organization are all sponsors of the event, but more assistance from the community is still needed, she said.

Businesses can help by becoming sponsors of the event and residents can help by attending fundraising nights, which are planned for the coming months at these businesses in Manassas.

Skate n' Fun Zone in Manassas, Feb. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Noodles & Co. in Manassas, March 21 from 4 to 9 p.m.

Bowl America on Mathis Ave in Manassas, April 13 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The May 4 run will begin with a 5K race. Last year, more than 100 runners participated, Baldwin said.

At 10 a.m. the annual Cougar Kids run will take place, followed by a raffle with hundreds of prizes and an award ceremony.

The Cougar Health & Wellness Fair starts at 9 a.m.  Attendees will have access to more than 15 local nonprofits sharing information and freebies, she said.

A hip hop class for children will also be taught by Charles Ewell.

Just to clarify--as usual--students who meet their reading goal, return their form, AND attend the event will receive one free t-shirt. They must complete all three of these as our goal is to link literacy AND wellness. Thank you for supporting our amazing schools!
