Washington (George, Not D.C.) is Great!

Furloughed? Why not take a trip out to Mount Vernon?

Update: the parking lots are now open.

The Mount Vernon Estate wants visitors to know: Washington D.C. may shut down, but Washington's home never does.

The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, a private group, owns George Washington's estate. So furloughed workers with time on their hands—and maybe some nostalgia for the president who warned against partisan government—can still take a trip to Washington's estate near the Potomac River.

That's not to say the estate is unaffected by the shutdown: two parking lots operated by the National Park Service near the estate are closed. Visitors will be directed to other areas for parking upon arrival.
