Virginia Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 5-7

Save on school supplies and clothing during the annual tax break.

Just in time for back to school shopping comes Virginia’s August sales tax holiday on school supplies and clothing. The three-day event takes place during the first full weekend of August each year. From 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 7, Virginia will suspend all taxes on items intended for school use. All retailers are required to participate in the program and have the option of absorbing the tax on other items sold during the holiday period.

Virginia sales tax is currently 5 percent.

Qualifying school supplies include those that sell for $20 or less per item. Qualifying clothing and footwear include those selling for $100 or less per item.
