Police are urging anyone with unwanted prescription drugs to turn in their medication on Saturday during the National Drug Take Back at the Manassas Park Police Department.
The purpose of the take back is to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
Prescription drug abuse in the U.S. is common and so are accidental poisonings and overdoses on unused drugs left in homes.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends.
Anyone can come by the police department between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and drop off the drugs, no questions asked.
Manassas Park's neighboring jurisdictions will also collect unused prescription drugs on Saturday.
Novant Health Prince William Medical Center, formerly known as Prince William Hospital, at 8700 Sudley Road will be accepting medications.
Other take back locations in the area are Heathcote Health Center in Haymarket and Sentara Lake Ridge in Woodbridge.
