New Route 28 Overpass at Wellington Road to Open This Week in Manassas

Vehicle will be allowed to use the bridge to travel south on Route 28, Virginia Department of Transpiration officials said.

The newly-constructed overpass on Route 28 at Wellington Road in Manassas will open to vehicles traveling south this week.

Virgina Department of Transporation engineers said they expect drivers to be able to use the bridge for north as well as south travel for the first time today.

Vehicles traveling to Wellington Road from southbound Route 28, also known as Nokesville Road, will now go over the bridge and turn left at the new traffic signal onto the new Wellington Road Connector, VDOT officials said on Friday.

Motorists have been able to use the bridge to travel south to north on Route 28  and access the bridge from a ramp on Wellington Road for several weeks, but haven't been able to travel south.

Cockrell Road will remain one-way from Route 28 for about three weeks until the new traffic signal is installed, VDOT engineers said.  After that, it'll be turned into two-way traffic to and from Route 28.

Traffic patterns remain the same for northbound Route 28 and both directions of Wellington Road.

The purpose of the overpass is to eliminate the at-grade railroad crossing which will improve safety and eliminate bottle necking when vehicle traffic is stopped for passing trains.

The $44 million project will be completed next month, VDOT said Friday.

VDOT officials told Manassas City Council in September that the project was delayed because of a miscalculation, but that the contractor on the project had been working overtime and weekends to stay get the bridge completed.

The overpass is a revenue-sharing project between the state and the city of Manassas.
