 In a time when public education is facing some extremely tough budget challenges, it is more important than ever to provide schools with operational flexibility, the city's school division officials said via their official Facebook page.

As it now stands, the law requires school districts in tourist areas to open after Labor Day in support of theme parks, hotels and resorts.

 A Virginia House of Delegates Education committee endorsed its repeal of the law on Monday, according to an Insidenova.com story. 

 Del. Bob Tata’s bill, which is supported by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, cleared the House committee on a 16-4 vote this week, Insidenova reports.

 In stalk contrast, a similar bill died last week in the Virginia Senate Education and Health Committee.

Some 77 of the state's 132 school divisions now have a waiver from the Virginia Board of Education to open before Labor Day.
