Manassas Park Schools Open Thursday

All four of the small city's school are open for classes on Thursday.

All four of the schools in Manassas Park are open Thursday, after being closed for three days because of a massive storm that moved through the area.

School division officials said early Wednesday that they would open Manassas Park High School and Manassas Park Middle School on Thursday but make a decision later about Cougar and Manassas Park elementary schools.

The two lower schools were without power after Hurricane Sandy damaged six power lines behind the campus, Manassas Park Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bruce McDade said in an earlier report.

Workers with Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative were able to restore power to the schools Wednesday.

NOVEC officials said Wednesday evening that most of its customers connected to the power grid after Hurricane Sandy’s winds and rain caused widespread power outages this week.

At the height of the storm, 32,000 NOVEC customers lost power, but as of 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, all but about 1,400 had electric service restored. Crews planned to work through the night to get everyone power by Thursday night, according to a release by the company.
