Planning Commission Discusses Parks and Recreation Projects

The Manassas Park Planning Commission continued their review of the Capital Improvements Program for 2012-2017 Monday during its monthly meeting Monday night.

City officials discussed renovating the Conner House, building a new skate park and other planned capital improvements with the Manassas Park Planning Commission Monday.

Capital improvements are prepared and submitted annually to the Manassas Park Governing Body by the planning commission, which serves as an advisory committee to the body.

Catherine Morretta, director of the city's parks and recreation department, and James Johnson, the city's director of public works, attended the meeting and reviewed projects, explained priorities and answered questions from the commission.

Morretta gave details about several projects, including repairs to the Signal Bay Waterpark facility, the tennis courts at Signal Hill Park, an expansion to the wellness center and a renovation of the interior of the Conner House, a National Historic Civil War era house in Manassas Park.

The commission also discussed the parks and recreation project for a permanent concrete skate park at Costello Park to replace the modular skate park that was removed.  Moretta said that the Manassas Park Skate Committee (MPSK8), a group of 25 Manassas Park youths has already begun fundraising to support the project.  The committee raised about $1,000 and are pursuing local business sponsors to support the project as well.  The previous park was regularly used and the new park would drive users to the Costello Park facility, city officials said.

During the discussion about phase two of Costello Park, Commissioner Bryan Polk inquired about the possibility of the proposed baseball fields generating income in a similar fashion as the pool through league rentals.  Moretta said she thought the income generated wouldn’t be as exciting as the pool rental income, but certainly worth pursuing.

Manassas Park's Director of Public Works, James Johnson, answered some questions about the funding for the construction of a sidewalk on Euclid Avenue from the intersection of Manassas Drive and Euclid Avenue north to Manassas Park High School.  The Virginia Department of Transportation will provide matching funds to the project, which will also be funded by the Motor Fuel Tax Fund.
