Manassas Park Changes Requirements for Public Works Director

Manassas Park city officials have changed the requirements for the role of public works director for the city.

The city has sought to hire a new person for the position since October, when Cathy Gamble, the former public works director retired after five years with the city, Manassas Park Interim City Manager and City Attorney Dean Crowhurst said.

"She did a phenomenal job," Crowhurst said. "She prepared the city for the next level."

So far, not a lot of people living in Manassas Park have applied for the job and a larger applicant pool would be nice, he said.

Job candidates were originally required to move to Manassas Park upon accepting the role, but that is no longer necessary, the city's attorney said.

Manassas Park hiring officials also asked that candidates have a professional engineering background, but that requirement was also removed.

The public works director is responsible for coordinating and directing sewer collection, storm water management, roads and water distribution.

The city of Manassas Park currently has water agreements with Prince William County and the city of Manassas.

The city has cordial relationships with both the county and Manassas and would like to maintain that, Crowhurst said.

Manassas Park along with Fairfax County, Prince William County and Manassas participate in a regional sewage authority through the Upper Occoquan Service Authority.

The public works director position pays between $81,000 and $109,000.

To be considered, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or another relevant degree as well as a degree in public administration or, relevant previous experience

 At least five years of public works and public utilities experience with at least three of those years at the executive management level are required for consideration.

Applications will be accepted until Dec. 30.
