President Barack Obama, a Democrat, defeated former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee in the presidential race. There are several third-party candidates in the race for president, as well.

Former Senator and Virginia Gov. George Allen was defeated by former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine in the race for the U.S. Senate. Allen, a Mount Vernon resident, was defeated by Jim Webb in the 2006 Senate race. Allen held the seat from 2000-2006.

Voters also decided who will represent the 10th Congressional District.

Republican U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf will continue to serve the 10th district, as he has since 1981. He did not face any primary challenge this year and in 2010 defeated Democrat Jeff Barnett with 63 percent of the votes to Barnett’s 35 percent. This year, a Democrat Kristin Ann Cabral and Independent J. Kevin Chisholm tried to unseat Wolf.

Two proposed Virginia Constitutional Amendments appeared on the ballot, one considering eminent domain law and the other about veto session delays.
