Victim Discovers ID Theft After Filing Tax Return

Police said someone stole a victim's identity and use it to file a fraudulent tax return.

Police and federal authorities are investigating a case of identity theft that was discovered after the victim filed his taxes.

It happened Feb. 23 when Internal Revenue Service officials contacted the victim's tax preparation service, saying the return was rejected.

Someone had apparently filed a return using the same name and social security number, according to police reports.

The victim reported the crime to the IRS Fraud Line, the Federal Trade Commission, credit reporting companies and Manassas Park Police.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
