Manassas Park Resident Victim of Scam

An elderly Manassas Park resident was the victim of a reported scam letter that claimed he'd won $50,000 from a London-based company

An elderly Manassas Park resident was the victim of a reported scam letter that claimed he’d won $50,000 from a London-based company, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Manassas Park Police Department.

It happened April 11 on the 300 block of Moseby Court when the victim received a letter from Kennedy Trust, Inc. based in London. The letter claimed the victim had won a $50,000 prize.

The scammers also sent a check for $4,937 claiming that it needed to be cashed to pay the taxes on the prize money, according to police reports.

 The victim cashed the check and sent the money to the scammers via Western Union.

 Officials from the bank that cashed the check later told the victim the check was part of a scam and the the financial institution had lost the money because the check was no good.

 A Manassas Park Police officer was dispatched to the residence to explain to the victim the dangers of scams and how to avoid being deceived again.
