Police said the man was driving without liability insurance when he lost control of the vehicle and sent it crashing into the convenience store.

A man trying to make a left onto Manassas Drive from Centreville Road lost control of his car and sent it careening into a nearby 7-Eleven store.

Carl Martin Jr., 56, of Manassas is charged with not having liability insurance, Manassas Park Police said.

The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the 7-Eleven at 8521 Centreville Rd. across from Roy Rogers Restaurant.

Police said the Martin was traveling south on Centreville Road (Route 28), tried to make a left turn, lost control and kept traveling through the parking lot, eventually stopping inside the convenience store.

The car engine briefly ignited, but was extinguished quickly, Manassas Park Fire Marshall Mark Joyner said.

No one inside the store was injured, but the driver was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The vehicle sustained about $10,000 in damage.

The total amount in damage to the store isn't known, police said.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Jan. 17.

Less than an hour later, firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at IHOP  restaurant at 8785 Centreville Rd. in Manassas about a mile up the road from the 7-Eleven.

The fire was extinguished and the restaurant was open for business shortly thereafter.
