 Pepper’s Take:

This week, the target of my taste buds was Mackey’s, a lofted eatery and local favorite in Old Town Manassas.

The place has an old sports bar feel to it, with a simple and quietly-decorated interior.

I was the only customer there besides a couple and their young child, who all appeared to be friends of the bartender. There wasn't room for much exploring; the place has two rooms—a dining area and a bar with stools and a few booths.

Mackey’s offers breakfast, seafood, steaks, wraps and more, so it was hard to figure out what to go with for dinner.

I ended up ordering the drunken rib eye with two crab cakes and a side of mashed potatoes.

The steak was cooked well, but not dry and the bourbon glaze made it all the more appealing.

The mashed potatoes and gravy were not the best, but eating them wasn't torture.

The crab cakes seemed overcooked— they were on the outside for sure. The cakes did, however, have a generous portion of actual meat and good seasoning.

I've tried many different crab cakes, so its possible I'm overly critical at times, but I certainly would have enjoy Mackey's take the dish if they were a bit smaller. I'm thinking this would have prevented the outside from tasting burnt.

All in all, my meal was good, the atmosphere was relaxing and the service was friendly. I won’t be rushing back any time soon, but I can certainly see how this establishment maintains its customer base.
