Mutts Matter: Sweet Athena

Athena is a social, good-natured boxer who will make an excellent family dog and companion.

Hey, guys! My name is Athena, and I'm an affectionate boxer girl with a handsome brindle coat and goofy smile that can brighten anybody’s day. I'm about four to five years old, weigh 55 pounds, and my favorite thing in the world is to cuddle and hang out by your side. I have a very sweet demeanor and gentle way about me, and would do great in a home with kids, or with a retired couple that has all day to spend with me.

My story is a little sad... I thought I’d found my forever home and was adopted almost two years ago by a family who committed to love and take care of me. They did their best, but fell on hard times. My parents ended up separating, and my dad could no longer properly care for me. He wanted me to have a great life and, realizing he could no longer provide for me, called Mutts Matter in to help. I know he loved me and it was really hard for him to let me go.

When I first arrived at my foster home, I was in shock and felt abandoned and scared. But now, after hanging out with my foster parents Vicki and Aaron for a few weeks, I have a renewed spring in my step, and realize that things are going to work out just fine. They take me on walks to the park, let me snuggle on the couch with them, give great belly rubs, and feed me delicious hot dogs instead of those pedestrian doggie treats. I'm a bit of a picky eater, and may be a tad spoiled too.

I'm quite the entertainer, and people say I have a great personality. Sometimes I wonder if that means I’m not as pretty as the other dogs, but that doesn’t seem possible. When it was time for my photo shoot, I posed like a perfect model, but in between shots I’d spring into the air like a gazelle, prancing around to make sure everyone appreciated my cuteness. I aim to please, and will do what I can to be the center of your attention.

Inside the home, I'm a really good girl. I'm potty-trained and crate-trained, but my foster parents don’t even use the crate for me because I’ve already earned their trust. I walk well on the leash and can do ‘sit’ and ‘down’ with the best of them. I try to be respectful of the home and my family too, and know proper manners.

I have a silly side too, and can be quite charming. After a good meal, I like to jump on the sofa and roll on my back to get a little scratch in while I make funny grunt noises. I amuse my foster parents with my ability to charm them into doing what I want. I’ll put my head on their lap when they are eating, and use the always-powerful head tilt and make my eyes extra big to see if they’ll share that last morsel of dinner... and it usually works!

I was loved in my last home, and really hope to find that again. I’m a good-natured, social dog who knows how to be part of a family, and understands how to behave by the rules. I'm sweet and loyal, and just want to be with my person. I will do everything I can to bring joy and companionship into your life.

If you are looking for a well mannered, affectionate, and all around great pup to join your pack, I'm your girl!
