Sammy & Spirit - Two Peas in a Pod

Two sweet pups rescued from a puppy mill who are getting a second chance at life, and looking for their new home.

Sammy and Spirit have come a long way.  They grew up in the same puppy mill where they were used solely for breeding purposes; both were kept in a cage, and were never loved, socialized or allowed basic freedoms. When they had outgrown their usefulness to the breeders, they were sold at an auction for a single dollar. Luckily, the winning bidder was a rescue group, and not a research lab, and that is where the next chapter of their story begins. They now live with a wonderful foster family in Germantown, Maryland, and are learning that people can be kind and loving.

Because they have been through this traumatic experience together, Sammy and Spirit are bonded liked brothers. They are learning the ropes of their new world together, and experiencing so many things for the first time; the comfort of a warm bed, the ability to walk and play freely in the yard, and the security of having safe, warm shelter at night. It's a learning process for them, and they do get intimidated from time to time, but dogs have an amazing ability to overcome their past and adapt to new environments. They have made huge strides in only a month of foster care.

Sammy and Spirit will do best with a family who is willing to give them some time to adjust and gradually introduce them to new experiences. Mutts Matter would love to see them adopted together, but as they are getting more and more confident each day, they will be ready to go their separate ways. They would do well in a home with a single person, couple, or family with older children.

SPIRIT

Hey there! My name is Spirit and I'm a white Bichon Frise, about three years old and ten pounds. I’m a laid-back pup by nature, and will make someone a great companion dog once I settle in. I’m a little more cautious than my buddy Sammy, but I’ve come out of my shell now and discovered how great squeaky toys, freeze dried chicken, and sleeping right next to my foster mom at night is. I love belly rubs, too, and sit super still while my foster mom rubs me. If she stops too soon, I give her a gentle reminder with my paw to keep going.

I’ve learned a lot in the past month. I walk great on a leash now, I’m crate-trained, know the word “outside,” and am almost potty-trained. I love to play with my pal Sammy, and would do well in a home with another small dog to learn from and build my confidence. I’m not so fond of cats though, so dogs only please.

SAMMY

Hi! I’m Sammy… I'm a black miniature poodle, about four years old and ten pounds. I’m a little more bouncy and energetic than my pal Spirit, but know how to be a good lap dog too. I’m friendly and affectionate, and I stay close to my foster mom and like to be held on her lap. Now that I’ve discovered the good life and human affection, I love having her attention.

I’m smart and learn quickly; I know the word “outside” and am almost fully potty-trained.  I’m still getting the hang of walking on a leash, but, at only ten pounds, I’m not hard to handle. I’m less hesitant than Spirit, and more trusting of people and my surroundings. My foster mom thinks I will adjust well to most home situations, and would be fine as an only dog or with other small dogs or cats.

A puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs.  If you want to learn more about them and how you can help stop the cycle of cruelty, click here - http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/puppy_mills/
