Owe Past Due Taxes? Manassas Park Will Boot Your Car

There are 1,100 past due tax accounts in Manassas Park and the city wants that money—all of it.

Manassas Park has implemented a very effective way of collecting the $850,000 in past due taxes owed to the city.

The Manassas Park treasurer's office is using the SmartBoot License Plate Recognition System to immobilize vehicles belonging to residents delinquent on their taxes.

The car boot doesn't come without warning, according to city officials. Residents who owe taxes have ignored several notices about their debt.

Vehicle owners who owe $200 or more in back taxes are subject to having their cars immobilize.

Pay the $150 release fee plus the past due taxes and receive a pass code that will release the boot in about five minutes.

Payments can be made by credit card 24 hours a day, seven days a week through a service center that can assist owners who have trouble removing the boot after paying.  The boot must be returned to the designated drop off location within 24 hours of removal.

If a payment isn't made after three days the boot will be removed—and the car towed away and eventually sold if payment arrangements aren't made.

What if I owe less than $200 in past due taxes?
Authorities place notices on the cars belonging to residents with past due taxes totalling less than $200, warning them that they are subject to the boot if the money isn't paid, city officials said.

There are more than 1,100  delinquent tax accounts in Manassas Park. City officials are working with the law firm of Taxing Authority Consulting Services, P.C. (TACS)  on the booting and tax collection program.

For account information or to make a payment, residents can call 804-545-2500; email questions@taxva.com or write to: Taxing Authority Consulting Services, P.C. P.O. Box 1270 Midlothian, Va. 23113

Account information can also be obtained from the Manassas Park Treasurer’s Office in city hall located at 1 Park Center Ct. Office hours are Mon.-Friday 8:30 to 1:30 p.m.  and then 3 to 5 p.m.

Question: Is booting an effective way to get the money the city has coming to it?
