U.S. Senate Candidate Kaine Takes A Tour of Main Street Manassas

Former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine shared his small business agenda during a Main Street tour in Old Town Manassas on Thursday.  During stops at Foster’s Grille, The Center for the Arts of Greater Manassas/Prince William County, Royal Cuts Barbershop, Dublin of Old Town and others, Kaine outlined his strategies to strengthen the economy and create jobs by encouraging small business growth, developing the world’s most talented workforce, and bringing more fiscal and political balance to Washington.
 
“In talking to small business owners around Manassas and across the state, it’s clear that people’s biggest concern is how to get the economy growing stronger,” said Kaine. “I have a Virginia-based approach to get the economy going which includes investments in infrastructure, education, and workforce development, as well as concerted efforts to level the playing field for our small and startup businesses so they can succeed, grow, and create jobs. That will mean reforms to the federal corporate tax code, reforms to help small business export their products to international markets, and ensuring businesses can access the capital they need to grow and hire.”
 
Kaine also shared his balanced approach to our fiscal issues and shared the lessons he learned as governor, cutting more than $5 billion in state spending while making investments in education, like classrooms and labs on Virginia’s college campuses, and transportation projects, including hundreds of millions for the first phase of Rail to Dulles. During Kaine’s term, Forbes named Virginia “Best State for Business” four years in a row, and world-class companies including Volkswagen, Hilton, and MeadWestvaco relocated their headquarters to the Commonwealth.
 
Kaine also discussed the importance of education from pre-K through higher education and workforce development programs.  With his strong emphasis on career and technical education, Kaine highlighted the need for highly skilled workers in new fields, including the emerging $2.3 trillion clean energy market. As governor, Kaine implemented Virginia’s first comprehensive energy plan and helped create nine Governor’s Career and Technical Academies across the state.
 
“Often it is things like the arts and technical education which help kids realize the relevance of what they learn in school and prepare them for successful careers,” said Kaine. “I’m a big career and technical education supporter. For too long our nation let career and technical education fall behind, but as governor, I worked to expand career and technical education programs and I would do the same as Virginia’s senator.”
 
Since the beginning of the year, Kaine has traveled the Commonwealth to hear concerns from Virginia workers and families and share his strategies for economic growth. He has held more than 70 economic roundtable discussions with business leaders, veterans, students, seniors, and others in every corner of the state.
