Rains Could Delay Commute for Residents Returning to Manassas Park Today

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch until tonight which could affect VRE travel.

Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to delay Manassas Park commuters’ arrivals home today.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch until tonight and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) officials said the rains could bring speed restrictions for Manassas Line riders, should that watch turn into a warning.

Trains will slow down to 15 miles per hour which will mean delays. The length of the delay will depend on where the speed restrictions are imposed and how far down the line VRE riders are traveling.

Delays of 60-75 minutes for end of the line riders on the Manassas Line and the cancellation of train 335 are likely, VRE officials said.

The company said in a Train Talk service email that the speed restrictions are for everyone’s safety. For emphasis, the company included a picture of an unoccupied Norfolk Southern car that derailed after a flash flood moved through Alexandria.
