Mother's Day Gifts: Old Town Boutique the Place of Mothers' Dreams

The Things I Love is a Manassas boutique filled to the brim with Mother's Day gifts.

Walking into The Things I Love is like walking into a hidden garden, with beautiful displays standing in for tree branches and delicate trinkets and jewelry posing as flowers.

"My shop is referred to as a 'girly shop' because it's a place for women," Joanne Wunderly, owner of The Things I Love, located inside the former Manassas Opera House.

Several items in her shop scream, "Mother's Day," Wunderly said, but she recommends the blown glass Tree of Life balls. Each delicate glass ball features a tree with a theme such as motherhood, family and faith.

The glass balls can be hung on a ribbon inside the home to reflect light and prompt pleasant memories, she said.

For the fashion-forward mom, there are plenty of unique, colorful scarves, earrings and jewelry to choose from.

The Things I Love is one of only a few hand-picked vendors in the state to sell the UK-based Powder brand scarves.

"Scarves right now are just the hottest," Wunderly said.

She also makes it a point to do business with locals.

"We really, really have a lot of creative people in the area. I have two or three jewelry vendors and they are all local," she said.

Fans of the fascinator, the eye-catching women's head pieces made popular by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince William, will likely be pleased by the boutique's selection.

Ladies can wear a fascinator or maybe just a lovely hat to the afternoon teas offered in The Things I Love tea room.

"It's really nice for even a new mom to get out of the house; maybe get somebody to take care of the baby for an hour so they can have tea," she said.

Chef Mary Anne Moreau serves up a full afternoon tea, complete with sandwiches, sweets and seasonal fruit. Staff can accommodate up to 13 people in the tea room or outside in the tea garden.

The store isn't open for tea on Mother's Day, but afternoon tea gift certificates can be purchased.

Certificates for "Tea for Two" come wrapped in a small purse with a bow, making a beautiful gift presentation, she said.
