The Beginning of the End: Review of This Summer's Movies

Manassas Park resident reviews this summer's flicks.

It has been a while since I gave a movie review, so I thought I would just tell my Manassas Park friends about the last few movies I have seen.  These reviews will not be as detailed as prior ones, but should help you make some decisons.

Bad Teacher starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake is a great dark comedy about a teacher's attempt to skate through life butl soon realizes the work needed to do so.

It has a good ensemble of faces you have seen in various comedies and has the right amount of inappropriate behavior.  This is definitely for adults only.  Great date movie or video night for a couple, but I repeat—not approved for children.

X-Men Origins: First Class gets the award for the best movie of the summer from me.  It chronicles the creation of the famed comic series.  X-Men is the subject of multiple cartoons and four previous films.  The last film, X Men Origins: Wolverine was a great let down compared to the previous films.  The new direction of First Class brought the prestige back to the franchise.  Great family film and with this cast of virtual unknowns, you can just enjoy character development.

Green Lantern and Captain America get my pick for the biggest bust of the summer.  While Captain America may have commercial success (166 million in ticket sales), this is the one of the worst superhero films ever produced.  Green Lantern was just as bad, but I did not expect much out of it.  I could go on for days about why, but this is just a warning to those who appreciate fine cinema—stay away from  these films.

Friends With Benefits brings Justin Timberlake back to the big screen after his hit with Bad Teacher.  This film gets the award for best romantic comedy of the summer.  One review said it's the, "When Harry Met Sally" of this generation. I agree wholeheartedly.  Great date movie and was much better than No Strings Attached.  I look forward to adding this film to my collection.

Last, but not least is the final chapter or rather, the second half of the final chapter of the Harry Potter franchise.  Deathly Hallows Part 2 was one word:Great.  I have seen all of the films several times over the summer and this film is one of the best.  I am sad to see the end of the franchise, but glad to have been along for the ride.   I'm wondering what will be the next big franchise.  The Potter franchise is currently the top of the list for grossing.  It has made a total of $7,645,257,883 across eight films.
