Manassas eighth grader Christopher Shoemaker will compete in the famed Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington DC this month.
Manassas middle school student Christopher Shoemaker will be among the spelling elite when he travels up the road to Washington D.C. for the Scripps Spelling Bee next week. Christopher, an eighth grader at Grace E. Metz Middle School, competed in the Prince William Spelling Bee on March 8 and defeated 23 other top spellers for first place. He spelled the word "Arcane" correctly for the win, landing him a spot at Scripps. City officials said Christopher lasted through 24 rounds of spelling over a two-hour period. He was recognized by Manassas City Council and the Manassas City Public School Board for his accomplishments. Incumbent board member Brenda Foster is seeking to retain her seat which expires on June 30.
Five residents are seeking to fill the two open seats on the Manassas Park School Board. The city accepted applications earlier this month for the expiring terms of school board Chairman Michael Wine and school board member Brenda Foster. Both terms expire June 30. Manassas Park school board members serve three-year terms. Wine said he is not seeking his position again, while Foster has reapplied for her position. This is her sixth year on the school board, said Foster who works full-time for a Washington D.C. public relations firm. City officials will review applications beginning this week. School board members are interviewed and appointed by the Manassas Park City Council.

Virginia Republican Party delegates officially nominated Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to run for governor at its state convention Saturday in Richmond. Cuccinelli, 44, essentially locked down the Republican nomination in November 2012, when outgoing Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced he wouldn’t be seeking the nomination. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is expected to formally accept the Republican nomination for Governor on Saturday morning, delivering a speech at the Virginia GOP's convention. More than 13,000 delegates are registered for the event. As the Republican candidate, Cuccinelli will face off against Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Nov. 5 general election. Contract Solutions Inc. (CSI) celebrated its ribbon cutting Thursday with business leaders from the Manassas area.
Corliss Udoema said she went from a makeshift office in her kitchen to landing multi-million dollar contracts with the federal government, all by using a simple method. “One word: prayer,” Udoema said on Thursday from Contract Solutions Inc.’s brand new office space just outside of Manassas in Prince William County. “(I prayed) for wisdom. I started with the computer and the telephone I had at home and with the brains the good lord gave me,” said Udoema who is the president and CEO of CSI. A crowd of local business leaders welcomed Udoema and CSI to its new home on Thursday during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Manassas Tea Party says it was one of the conservative organizations faced with extra hurdles and unusual delays in receiving tax-exempt status from the IRS, according to a post by organizers at the MTP website. President Barack Obama announced the resignation of acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller on Wednesday night. The Justice Department launched an investigation Friday into the extra scrutiny applied by IRS employees on tea party applications and whether high-ranking members of the IRS misled or lied during congressional testimony in 2012, according to the New York Times. The veteran veterinarians of Prince William Animal Hospital are preparing to break ground on a new building on its existing lot in Manassas.
Veterinarian Teresa Brown's dream of building a larger animal hospital to serve the 5,000-plus patients is one step closer to coming true. The city of Manassas issued a Special Use Permit for the building of the new 8,600 square foot facility—the new home for Prince William Animal Hospital. The practice will remain on Nokesville Road on the same parcel of land as the current hospital located inside a small house, Brown said. The three buildings now on the property-the animal hospital, a staff break room and a storage facility-will eventually be torn down as the phases of the new hospital are completed. Letter to local lawmaker from Trader Joe's official does encourage Prince William County-area residents to keep the hope for TJ's alive.
It looks like the popular Trader Joe's food store chain won't be doing business in the Prince William County-area anytime soon, leaving many area residents to continue their regular mecca to the nearest TJ's in Centreville. In April, Prince William County Supervisor Michael May reached out to the company and asked if it would consider opening a store in Woodbridge. May's letter prompted a response from Rachel Broderick of Trader Joe's customer relations.
