President Obama, Bill Clinton, Dave Matthews Visit Bristow

Crowds brave chilly night, long lines at Jiffy Lube Live for Obama's swing-state campaign stop just days before Tuesday's election.

A huge crowd braved long lines — some waiting as long as five hours — and a cold Saturday night to hear President Barack Obama make his case for reelection at a grassroots rally at Bristow’s Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater.

The campaign stop also featured former President Bill Clinton and Virginia-native Dave Matthews.

In his late-night address to the crowd, Obama cast the election as a choice between two different visions of America.

“The people who need a champion are the Americans whose letters I read late at night; the men and women I meet on the campaign trail every day,” Obama said. “It’s about the kids dreaming of becoming scientists or doctors, engineers or entrepreneurs, diplomats or even a president. They need a champion because the future will never have as many lobbyists as the past, but it’s the dreams of those children that will be our saving grace.”

Obama, energized and showing no sign of fatigue from the hours of campaigning on Saturday, was often interrupted by the crowd with chants of “four more years.”

"After four years as president, you know me," Obama said. "So, when you're trying sort through this argument about change, part of what you have to ask yourself is, 'Who do you trust?'"

A slightly hoarse President Clinton told the crowd President Obama deserves four more years in office for a variety of reasons from signing the Lily Ledbetter Act for equal pay to supporting Planned Parenthood.

One of those reasons, Clinton said, is that "he has fulfilled his solemn responsibility to be a good commander-in-chief," he said, citing Obama's international successes.

He also joked, "And, he has a heck of a secretary of state."

Watch both Presidents Obama and Clinton's speeches in Bristow in the media box located up and to the right. See photos from President Obama's visit to Bristow here.

About two-dozen Romney supporters gathered across the street from the rally waving signs and chanting “three more days,” to passersby. They left before the president arrived.

Some polls indicate the Virginia race is still a toss-up, but supporters of Republican challenger Mitt Romney said absentee voting trends in the state show the enthusiasm Virginians displayed for the president in 2008 has waned in this election.

Thousands in Virginia have already voted absentee and some reports indicate early voting in other states has been strong. The Obama campaign contends that its early voting advantage in battleground states will make it difficult from Romney to catch up on Election Day.

Crowd Shows Enthusiasm

There was no lack of enthusiasm in the crowd on Saturday night. Tracy Bishop and Michael Athanas made the four-and-a-half hour drive from Blacksburg to see the president. They arrived at the outdoor amphitheater at 2 p.m. Saturday, well before the doors opened at 7 p.m.

“We’re here because we support the president,” Athanas said. “Obama brought us out of war and has begun to fix the economy. Everybody forgets about how bad things were during the eight years of (President George W.) Bush.”

Monique Moody, of Gainesville, and Lynnett Harris, of Manassas, also said they were enthusiastic. “I’m supporting him because he’s moving in the right direction with jobs and the economy. Things are much better than they were four years ago.”

Harris agreed. “Everything was a mess when he took office,” Harris said. “Everybody knows that you need more than just four years to clean things up. There is an awful lot at stake in this election.”

Winchester residents Jim Micklewright and his wife Maryann Iacobucci said they turned out because they wanted to show that their support for Obama had not diminished. They both voted for him in 2008.

“We both feel a positive enthusiasm,” Micklewright said. “There is no war in Iraq and the world opinion of America has changed. Other countries have more respect for us because Obama is not about telling people to behave the way he wants them to.”

Keith Bird, a transplanted Englishman living with his family in Bristow, said he has been absorbed by the election and continues to support Obama.

“I believe in what he says and in the promises that he makes,” Bird said. “A lot of the changes that he has made are good, like what he’s done with health care and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

In 2008, Obama won Prince William County (which includes the community of Bristow) with 58 percent of total votes reported. On Sunday, Obama will swing through rallies in Concord, N.H. (with Bill Clinton); Ft. Lauderdale; Cincinnati and Aurora, Colo.

Romney will hold a rally on Monday at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at George Mason University in Fairfax City. Details on tickets, parking and what you can bring into the venue are available here.

Were those Ambassadors begging for more security?
Were those embassies in places that all other Western countries had moved out of?
Was there an Ambassador Killed?
Was a State dept. officer killed?
Were Americans killed defending from attack?
Did George Bush blame it on a video?
Is Barack Obama running against George Bush?

Mary, I watched every minute of those C-Span hearings. However, you must have been watching MSNBC--if you had watched C-Span you would know that Ms. Lamb was asked if money was the reason that more security was not provided and her reply was "NO".
Yes, the Republicans did cut the money from State--but State still had enough money to provide $100,000 for an electric charging station at the Vienna embassy (Plus a champagne reception for it!) State also spent almost 1MILLION dollars on a State dinner at the White House for the Mexican President. ($4700) per guest. Nice, huh? Beyonce was the entertainment and a chef was imported from Chicago. Other State dinners were in the $500,000 range. State is providing Marine support in Barbados and many other "dangerous" countries. Money was not the issue.
The Brits and other Western countries had left Benghazi because of the frequent attacks and danger. Why was our Ambassador there without proper security? I don't know the answer--but it wasn't money.

Kathy,

Did you complain about George W Bush, after his leadership led to not one, but several deadly attacks on US diplomatic posts?

• June 14, 2002, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan
Suicide bomber kills 12 and injures 51.

• February 28, 2003, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan
Gunmen on motorcycles killed two consulate guards.

• July 30, 2004, U.S. embassy in Taskkent, Uzbekistan
Suicide bomber kills two.

• December 6, 2004, U.S. consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Militants stormed and occupied perimeter wall.
Five killed, 10 wounded.

• March 2, 2006, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan Suicide car bomber
killed four, including a U.S. diplomate directly targeted by the assailants.

• September 12, 2006, U.S. embassy in Damascus, Syria
Gunmen attacked embassy with grenades, automatic weapons, and a car bomb. One killed and 13 wounded.

• July 9, 2008, U.S. consulate in Istanbul, Turkey
Armed men attacked consulate with pistols and shotguns. Three policemen killed.

• September 17, 2008, U.S. embassy in Sana'a, Yemen
Militants dressed as policemen attacked the embassy with RPGs, rifles, grenades and car bombs. Six Yemeni soldiers and seven civilians were killed. Sixteen more were injured.

Are you just looking to score cheap political points for Romney, even after Ambassador Stevens family has pleaded that the Libya attack not be politicized?
Wait for the full report to be completed, and take your meds.

Very interesting!

Residents of the states that know Romney best -- Massachusetts where he was governor and now lives, and Michigan where he was born and raised -- both strongly favor Obama, not Romney. They must know something that Romney supporters in PA don’t know!

Have you been watching and reading about the damage and devastation of Sandy?
FEMA ran out of water and didn't put out the request for more until Friday.
Governor Christie praised Obama on the first day. That doesn't mean he supports him. He is doing what is best for his state right now---and that does not include ticking off the President (who went right to Vegas after he left NJ--just like he did after Benghazi--that's CARING?
Hopefully, FEMA response will be better this time--but the people on Long Island and Staten Island might challenge your comment. Things are a MESS--people are NOT getting help from FEMA.
Do you really think the endorsement of Bloomberg carries any weight right now? This is a man who is totally clueless--determined to go ahead with the NYC marathon which would have put newly homeless people out of hotels for runners? He didn't cancel marathon until sponsors and the NYPD and first responders made him cancel it.
And, you trust his judgment?

One of the few times Obama has told the truth is when he said, "...you know me." Yup. We do. A destroyed economy (1.7% growth rate), annual deficits (over $1 Trillion per year --- borrowing $4 Billion A DAY, mostly from China whose military machine we are thereby financing), massive unemployment (7.9%), staggering debt for our children ($16 Trillion), 15 Million more people on food stamps (now at over 43 Million people), destroyed American influence abroad (anti-American riots in several mid-East countries, and he abandoned and let die our Libyan Ambassador and 3 other Americans in Libya and is involved in a massive cover-up worse than the Watergate scandal...where no one died!), massive cover-up of Fast and Furious gun-running operation where Americans and dozens of Mexicans were killed with guns sent by his and Eric Holder's Injustice Department and protected from 'transparency' (cough, cough...) by 'Executive Privilege, etc. etc and 4 years of innumerable lies, too many to even enumerate. Yup. Some of us know him. The others merely bury their heads in the sand, or gave up studying arithmetic in the 7th grade (which is what he told Jay Leno last month that he did...and he thought it was funny.) Those millions of Americans who suffer because of him also know him and don't think it's funny at all.

Saw the President last night in Bristow. Awesome, 24,000 person capacity crowd rally with former President Bill Clinton and US Senate candidate Tim Kaine.

Obama’s electoral vote count forecast without Virginia is just shy of the 270 needed to win.

From the Patch:
“In 2008, Obama won Northern Virginia by 234,079 votes. In the rest of the state combined, he edged Republican John McCain by 448 votes, so what happens in Northern Virginia is what determines the 2012 outcome for the state.

By the 2010 census it was a “minority majority” county in which only 48.7 percent of residents were non-Hispanic whites. Blacks, who had accounted for 11.6 percent of Prince William’s population 20 years before, made up 21 percent in 2010.

Between 2000 and 2010, the county’s Hispanic population grew from 9.7 percent to 20.3 percent and its Asian population rose from 3.9 percent to 8.1 percent.”

Voters in this demographic remember the vitriolic anti-immigrant tirades of the Republican primaries.

So, the dominoes will fall like this. Because of the significant change in these demographics, Obama will win Prince William by double digits on Tuesday which in turn will carry the State of Virginia’s 13 electoral votes. This will put Obama over the 270 electoral votes needed to be re-elected. And, there are dozens of other highly likely electoral vote combinations that also have President Obama exceed 270 votes.

Be sure to vote on Tuesday.

despite strong Republican obstructions:

+ Led the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
+ Improved US relationships with most allies.
+ Directed killing of several leaders of Al Qaida.
+ Implemented harsh sanctions on Iran.
+ Brought together coalition to remove dictator Gaddhafi from power in Libya.
+ Implemented Obamacare to provide healthcare for millions of people who previously did not have health coverage, and to mandate several health cost-cutting measures.
+ Ended the discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy in the military.
+ Supports same-sex marriage.
+ Supports the equal pay act to provide equal pay for women and men.
+ Led the nation out of worst recession (gotten into by Bush) in many decades.
+ Implemented stimulus act to revive economy.
+ Ended war in Iraq, an unnecessary and unbudgeted war started by George W Bush.
+ Began drawdown of war in Afghanistan.
+ Passed necessary Wall Street reform to prevent future financial collapse.
+ Helped turn around auto industry.
+ And, much, much more!

FORWARD! with Obama-Biden! Not back to the Bush years

Being the transplanted Englishman quoted above, just to be clear what I actually said when I said that I believed the promises that Obama makes, I was referring to the fact that I don't think he tried to deceive people.  However I do think that he was somewhat naive and inexperienced coming into the White House, but whether you agree with his policies or not, whether you challenge if/how some of them have been completed or not,  you can't tell me that many of the things he said he'd deliver on didn't happen, or that he didn't try, or that he's still not trying, without a good reason.  For Romney / Ryan to go on promising their audiences exactly what they want to hear, even though they know it's not mathematically possible to achieve is very deceptive.

Keith, The problem is that Obama may mean well but he has made some terrible decisions. He just does not understand how business or organizations get things done. He never really had a chance because he never really worked in the private sector--and voted "present" most of the time in the public sector.
When he said we need a "Secretary of Business" it was clear that he does not even understand the functions of the Department of Commerce. That is just sad.

I wouldn't mind voting for the Republican party if they truly represented Republican values.  I understand that some people vote for the traditional values of their party even if they're not really thrilled with their candidate or current party's manifesto.  But I just can't bring myself to do it in this case.  I am for individualism, low government involvement and allowing the market to drive the economy, with the thought of outright socialism and people getting a free ride leaving a bad taste in my mouth.  But the current installment of the Republican party scares me more.  If they weren't so ideological, extreme, hypocritical and as of late, incompetent, then I'd be much more willing to vote for them.

If a Republican came to my house and asked me why I was thinking about voting for Obama I would probably keep my mouth shut too, because I'm tired of hearing the same arguments, put downs and scare tactics.

For those people turned off by both candidates this year, I'd like to ask them to think about which candidate /party they least want to see in government and to vote for the other guy.  Or even go independent.  But whatever you do, don't waste that right to bring in (or keep out) the people you'll be paying to run your country for the next 4 years.

I asked him what Obama had done. His reply that his loan interest had been dropped to 3%. This young man and his wife both had good jobs--but he expects the government to subsidize his college loans. That, too, is sad.

Obama up in swing states in early voting:

http://news.yahoo.com/obama-seems-early-vote-lead-key-states-204705391--election.html

But I have to wonder what any Romney voters are thinking. Who knows Romney better than anybody? How about the state who actually voted him in before, as Governor. So let's take a moment to look at how the only state who has any working knowledge about how Romney governs, is voting...

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/ma/massachusetts_romney_vs_obama-1804.html

The average of all polls, whether you believe some to be conservative or liberal leaning, still gives Obama a 20+ point lead. So my question is, why aren't more people paying attention to this? You can't shrug it off that it is MA and they always lean this way, because they voted Romney himself in as a Republican. The reality is that Romney can't even get close in this election in the only state that he has governed before, where the people actually know what you get if you vote for Romney. If he was the success that he pretends to be in MA, don't you think that he would be leading in MA or at the very least, have a close race going on there?

I really thought that I had dummied down my post enough that even the most simple minded of readers could understand it. I guess I had further down to go for somebody like you to follow it. My post is about how Massachusetts (can you say that... Maaassachuuuusetts), the one state where Mitt Romney was elected Governor, is one of the states that Romney is being hammered in. You can't call MA voters ideologues who only vote party line, because they are the ones who voted this Republican into office and who also voted in Scott Brown to fill Ted Kennedy's seat and even Scott Browns race is close. They are not voting for Romney in such large numbers, because he failed them as a leader. This is the only example in America to look at Romney's experience and the affect an that population and they don't want him back. This really shouldn't be that hard to follow.

Damn, I just realized that I used the word "ideologues" in this post. You still aren't going to understand this, are you? I guess that you are just going to have to ask a friend, neighbor or relative, smarter than yourself, to explain all of it to you.

Kathy Keith

5:47 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2012

Gee, Watts, Do you really have to call me names? I admit I missed the Massachusetts part--so I was wrong. Are you happy?
Now, to your part about ideologues. Apparently, Massachusetts does have a lot of ideologues, because it APPEARS that it is about to get rid of Brown who has tried so hard to vote moderately and do what his constituents wish.
Instead, it appears today that MA will elect a woman who claimed Native American status to her own advantage, represented insurance companies, and is herself one of the 1%. Add to that, she practiced law without a license in Massachusetts. Of course, the rules don't apply to her.
Did you watch C-Span during her hearings? She was asked about the TARP budget which she was running and she didn't even know what her budget was!
She'll make a great Senator. She already has the spending down pat.

2) How could you miss the "part" about Massachusetts? Except for teh first line, that whole post was about MA and if you clicked on the link it took you directly to the MA figures on the RCP site.

So forgive me if your missing the "Massachusetts part" in a post that is 95% all about MA and linking to MA data, pretty much depletes any credibility that you are struggling to regain. If you could somehow overlook that the whole post, with repeated references to MA, was not about MA polling, how accurate of a critical eye is anybody like myself or anybody else reading your post, suppose to assume that you give to anything that you are talking about. The post was just 9 sentences long with a direct link to Massachusetts polling figures and three direct references to the state itself. Hence, the exact reasons why I made that post. You nailed exactly what I was thinking and the reason for the post. There are a load of low to no information voters and I think that it is significant to recognize exactly how hated Romney is in the one state that voted him in before, for which he claims his only experience in governing (which is something that he has been talking about a lot this week).

Between Ryan and Romney, you arguably have 3 "home states"...MI, WI and MA (obviously, I am not going to note every state that Romney owns a home, like CA, but you get the point). They are loosing in all three of those states.

Then you look at Obama/Biden and again, you arguably have three home states; DE, IL and HI. And they are winning all three of those states with huge numbers.

I do think that it is significant to point out that the three states where there should be a disproportionate amount of love for Romney/Ryan, actually show the exact opposite. And the one state that Ryan governed, an experience that he is now hammering his audiences with on the campaign trail, is actually indicating a landslide win for Obama.

I may believe that post to be an exceptionally weak point to make, but at least she is backing up what she says. If anything, I should be getting a thank you card, because while it is a little late in the game for her in this election cycle, at least she is going to be better equipped to debate issues on the internet. I bet she will never jump into a discussion the way that she did with me; full of condescension when she wasn't even correct in her assumptions to begin with. Now she will probably think things through first, use a little critical thinking, know how to support claims, etc. You may not like my methods, but Kathy probably won't forget this as quickly as most interactions in these forums and she would loathe to admit it, but in just 20+ hours, she is far better equipped make points and counter arguments, than she was yesterday.

Now go vote Obama!

Fmr. Governor of Virginia Wilder does not endorse Obama this time around. He says that Romney has met the test to be President.
He endorse neither. He did endorse Obama in 2004.

Speaking of endorsements:

Obama welcomed the Colin Powell endorsement at a rally in Richmond, Virginia.

"I was proud and humbled to learn that we have Colin Powell's support in this campaign. I'm grateful to him for his lifetime of service to his country both as a soldier and as a diplomat," he told the crowd.

The president earlier called Powell to thank him, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One before landing in Virginia, a battleground state where the military vote is important.

"When he took over, the country was in very, very difficult straits, we were in one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression ... we were in real trouble," Powell said, adding that housing market has started to pick up, the auto industry has recovered and consumer confidence is rising.

Powell also criticized Romney's foreign policy as inconsistent and questioned the former Massachusetts governor's ability to address the deficit and looming defense cuts.

"I'm not quite sure which Governor Romney we'd be getting with respect to foreign policy," he told CBS, calling Romney's foreign policy "a moving target."

Powell, a moderate Republican, served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush.

A retired four-star general, Powell was also chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under former President George H.W. Bush and was national security advisor under former President Ronald Reagan.

So likewise, the news is that he does not endorse Romney. Is this really how desperate that things have gotten that Romney fans are scratching around the floor searching for crumbs like this article?
