Manassas Park's first off-leash dog park officially opened its doors to dogs and their human companions this week, according to a press release issued Monday by the Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation.

Department officials said dogs of all types—form mutts to purebreds; from the smallest of Chihuahuas to the greatest of Great Danes—are all welcome at the new facility.

The fenced‐in park allows dogs to run free and play, allowing for recreation and socialization in a safe environment, according to the press release.

There is even separate sections for dogs weighing more than 20 pounds and for smaller dogs less than 20 pounds to ensure a positive "tail‐wagging" experience.

"I am excited to have this dog park in Manassas Park, it has been in the department’s vision for a long time," Catherine Morretta, director of parks and recreation said. "This park, although not 100 percent furnished yet, is fenced sufficiently to allow dog lovers to exercise their pets in a great open space."

The city has hosted several fundraising events for the dog park in the last few years, including Santa Paws, Mardi Paws and Amazing Race. Each fundraisers involved the participation of dogs and their owners.

A formal grand opening is scheduled for this fall.

The dog park is located in Costello Park behind the Manassas Park Community Center at 99 Adams St.

The best access point for the park is on Tremont Street.

Dog park hours are from dawn to dusk.

Rules for the park are posted on site.  For more information, contact Catherine Morretta c.morretta@manassasparkva.gov or 703.335.8871.

Annie and Odin Love having a park so close to home! Just remember if you go to take water, they don't have it hooked up yet.
