Giant at Manassas Junction to Close Nov. 1

The Giant is located at the busy intersection of Liberia Avenue and Centreville Road in Manassas, just a stone's throw from Manassas Park.

The Giant Food Store location at the busy intersection of Liberia Avenue and Centreville Road in Manassas won't be around for Thanksgiving shopping this year.

Giant Food of Landover, MD announced this week that the Giant at 8819 Centreville Rd. in the Manassas Junction Shopping Center will close forever at 6 p.m. Nov. 1.

The store has been open for 31 years, Giant officials said.

“After a thorough review of the operating performance of our stores, we made a very difficult decision to close the Manassas Junction location,” said Anthony Hucker, president of Giant Food in a release. “We regret any inconvenience this will cause and encourage our Manassas Junction customers to shop at our nearby store locations.”

The neighboring Blockbuster Video in the shopping center also closed its doors within the last 12 months, leaving a nail salon, a Dominio's Pizza and a Starbucks.

There are other Giants less than five miles away at 10100 Dumfries Road in Manassas (2.2 miles) 8025 Sudley Road in Manassas (3.7 miles).

All pharmacy customers will receive notification by mail in advance of the closing with details about pharmacy record transfers.

Wow. I am shocked and saddened. This is our "go to" Giant. What a shame.

This is very sad news. I have shopped there since it opened. The employees are fantastic. They are more customer friendly than the other Giants. Please reconsider closing this store.

Shoppers will be the closest store for people in Blooms, and now Food Lion is the closest for the older section of MP. Kinda sad.

That's what I was just thinking about Shawn! Gosh now MP REALLY needs a grocery store!

The place always looked lonely - I think it was a traffic flow problem.

Oh no! This is my stop on my way home to pick up items for dinner. I will be very sorry to see this store close.

Reprehensible! The employees were notified Tuesday - the day before the item appeared in the Manassas paper. Makes one re-think what store(s) deserve your loyalty.

This was bound to happen when the Super Walmart opened along with a Shoppers, Food Lion, Aldi, and Harris Teeter within a mile of the store. Capitalism at work.

They should build a mix used development at this location to support the planned "light rail" from Manassas to Herndon. (To be built 30 years from now)

Looks like no one cares about this side of manassas, there are alot of people here who walk to this giant, been shopping in this manassas giant for aleast 30 years, and there are a couple of workers have been in this store for over 20 years, wake up and keep this store. Terry

I have been shopping at this store since it opened. Without a Giant on this side of Manassas, Giant will loose me as a regular customer both for groceries and pharmacy.
    I am extremely disappointed.

I'll miss the store, but have been going a lot less since they closed the seafood section a few years ago.

I blame this on poor store management. I've been going to this store for over 20 years, but things really started going downhill when they went into cost cutting mode in the late 90’s. The deli started closing at 7pm or earlier, some of their better selling products were no longer stocked, and of course, fewer registers were open. The last few years they started keeping the deli open until 8pm again, and opened more registers when necessary but I guess it was too little too late. We should have seen the writing on the wall when they never went through with a long overdue renovation and expansion. With a better management team and a renovation this store could have been saved. I don't think I'll be going to any of the other Giant's, since they are all further away then the other local chains.
I predict that this plaza will be sold and rebuilt in the next couple of years, but I hope the other remaining stores don't become casualties as I frequent many of them (Hair Cuttery, Taco Bell, SunTrust). At least I won't have to go out of my way to get gas anymore. It won't be worth the trip just to use my points, since I won't have any left.

I have over the years started shopping at this store. I live closer to many others but I have taken into my heart this Giant and have become closer to the employees. Its often nice to hear your name called out by one of the employees that are now your friends. I will miss my each and every one of my friends. Thanks for the happy years

Since Walmart expanded and opened its doors with the supermarket it has surely put a strain on Giant. The Shoppers grocery store is feeling the crunch too.

Would love to see a Wegman's go in there, but I know it won't happen. It would be too close to the one in Gainesville. I don't mind driving to Gainesville to shop at Wegman's.

Wegmans in Manassas? That would fit right in like a Mercedes dealer. Wrong demographics. Maybe a Dollar General or another Tractor Supply. Looks kinda funny like a vast wasteland with just the Giant Food Gas Station
